Known as the Vampire Fish, the payara is one of the fiercest predators in the Amazon. Distinguished by its long, razor-sharp fangs and explosive strikes, the payara is a top prize for adventurous fly anglers at Kendjam Lodge.
Payaras are often found rolling in the early morning or aggressively chasing baitfish in pools and deep runs. They are famous for their acrobatic jumps and intense fights — but landing one is a true test, as their hard mouths make hooksets extremely challenging.
We target them using streamers paired with intermediate or sink-tip lines. Their average size ranges from 5 to 20 pounds, but their fight is among the fiercest in the Amazon. Hooking a payara combines precision, strength, and adrenaline — delivering an unforgettable jungle fly fishing experience.
The fish
Known as the "vampire fish" for its impressive lower teeth, the Payara is a powerful challenge for any angler.
How to Fish
Using fast and aggressive techniques to simulate injured fish can attract explosive strikes from the Payara. These fish prefer to lay and hunt in the tailout of deep pools close to rock areas and in deep fast water runs.
Recommended Equipment
9 to 10 weight rods with fast sinking lines are necessary to handle the strength and agility of the Payara.
Recommended Flies
Large streamers with dark colors that imitate injured fish, such as "Black Magic" and "Red Tail," are ideal for this species. Tandem hook flies are recommended to ensure better hookup rates.
