The matrinxã is one of the most electrifying species to target at Kendjam Lodge. Known for its aggressive behavior and strength, this jungle fish is often compared to a mix between a trout and a bonefish when hooked. They live in shallow flats, fast runs, and crystal-clear pools of the Iriri River, offering ideal conditions for sight fishing.
Matrinxãs feed on a wide range of prey, from insects and fruits to small fish, making them prime targets with dry flies, poppers, and small streamers. They average between 3 to 8 pounds, but what they lack in size compared to a giant arapaima, they more than make up for in speed and power.
Get ready: once hooked, a matrinxã will explode across the river, often forcing you deep into your backing! Fly fishing for matrinxã offers pure Amazon adrenaline with light tackle gear (recommended 5-6wt rods).
The fish
The matrinxã is an omnivorous and native fish to the Amazon basin, known for its agility and strength, characterized by a robust, silvery body and a diet that includes insects, fish, crustaceans, fruits, and seeds that fall into the water. This fish is famous for its aerial acrobatics when hooked.
How to Fish
To catch matrinxã, fishing techniques using lures that mimic fruits and insects are effective. Fishing should preferably be done in the calmer parts of the rivers or where there is an abundance of fruit trees on the banks.
Recommended Equipment
A 5 to 7-weight fly rod is ideal, combined with a floating line and a 16 to 20-pound leader up to 9 feet long to withstand the runs and jumps of this amazing fish. We recommend using a fluor carbon shock tippet of 20-25 pounds.
Recommended Flies
Imitations of small fruits, bright streamers, and small poppers are effective. Patterns such as "Crease Popper," "Chernobyl Ant," and grasshopper imitations are especially attractive to the Matrinxã.
